Celtic 'Hunting Team' Tattoo

It took a decade for this returning client to feel like he needed something to balance the Celtic dogs tattoo I did for him way back when. This time I created a custom knotwork uniting a pair of hunting hounds with falcons, representing the animals who willingly go to the chase in service to their human masters.

Celtic Python Tattoo

Today a very special request made an interesting challenge. The client asked for a green tree python as a memorial for his father, a herpetologist and physician. At one time in his childhood they had over 100 snakes in a room in their house! So this was a person who would know if I rendered the snake accurately! Fortunately the studio in-house zoologist, ColinFraser, was able to find a photo of the right pose so characteristic of this species, and I could render that into line art and add it to a Celtic ring representing a branch. Tough color to achieve in a tattoo, a unique visual, and a fine way to memorialize his father.

"Morelia viridis, the green tree python, is a species of python found in New Guinea, islands in Indonesia, and Cape York Peninsula in Australia.
Primarily arboreal, these snakes have a particular way of resting in the branches of trees; they loop a coil or two over the branches in a saddle position and place their head in the middle." -Wikipedia

She who Would Be Art

A decade ago this woman travelled from Fresno and got this "Protectorant" design on her back. It was one of the first times I had used colored dots in a pattern, and it did not age well. So this week when she returned the first order of business was to do a rebuild on it, achieving what I had intended. I'll be the first to admit tattooing is not easy, it is a challenge to learn new styles and methods. And I happily persevere. I'm grateful when clients let me experiment, and never too proud to admit when a tune-up is necessary!

A thistle tattoo in honor of her Scottish husband seemed a bit weak, so we changed it a little.

And finally, she who insisted on making the most of her trip to Santa Barbara, had me wrap a series of Pictish spirals across her shoulder. Now finally she has a tattoo she can look down and enjoy instead of having so much work just on her back.

Huzzah for clients with stamina!

Pictish Boar Foot Tattoo

There is an ancient nautical tattoo tradition that says if you have your feet tattooed with a pig and a rooster you will never drown. I convinced this young fellow to go it one better and get this Pictish boar.

The original Pictish stone carving on which this boar tattoo is based is housed in the antiquities museum in Edinburgh, Scotland. Rendering it with dots, as shown, brings out the sense of it having been pecked into the stone.
